Every Saturday morning the reading and painting club is open for anybody who wants to join, in the afternoon cultural alternative rock bands.

Every Thursday Danzon dance, everybody is welcome.

It is a pleasure to see this Plazuela re-activated, people of all ages are getting involved in this cultural activities, and expecting more people to join. Plazuela Zaragoza is in the last phase of its restoration, but already looks very nice, new floor tiles, benches, lights and Kiosko; the regional trees and vegetation make it a very cozy place.

It was originally built in 1854, in 1862 was named as “Plaza del Puerto Viejo” but change the named when the General Zaragoza was killed in combat to honor him.

In 1953/54 the City major Dr. Angel Armenta decided to remodel making it more modern, the old design was change for a contemporary arquitecture. Fortunate in 2010 the city major Jorge Abel Lopez started a restoration of the original version of the Plazuela to preserved our history, culture and arquitecture.

Since 1823 the economy in the State was based on the very prosperous mining industry, but during the 1950 decade it became in crisis, fact that made local investors seek for new economical activities: Shrimp Fishing and Tourism.

The fishing activity was practice even before the pre-Hispanic era, when the natives by using a very simple method and taking advantages of the ocean tides used to catch crustaceous and fish, just closing the ocean natural entrance of water to the mangroves, but it was only and mainly to satisfy their own demand.
At the beginning of the 19th century they started to sell the product to a different market than the local motivated with the arrival of the new railroad routes and the inclusion of Mazatlan in the new maritime commercial circuits. This opportunity was taken by Mazatlecos to show the potential and quality of the product to external markets.

Years later the industry was favored by the appearance of laws that encourage the exploitation of marine resources, also the arrival of Japanese fisherman who contributed with new techniques.

The shark fishing was the first important activity in the port, in some way it was the starting point of flourishing in the Shrimp Industry. The Shark fishing had its pick time in the middle 30’s because the necessity of vitamin “A” that was use to heal injure; this vitamin was found in the liver of the shark. United States was the main buyer and Mazatlan was one of the main producers.

In 1921 an American citizen fished shrimp for the first time in the California gulf using a technique known as trawl but it wasn’t profitable at that time.
In 1938 the Japanese started working in Sinaloa with more advance techniques over the American companies; also as part of their work program they provided training for the Mexican fisherman so they could improve in to their own industry.
In the first season they signed a contract between the fisherman cooperative and Nipon Suissan Company in which they established to give 2 ships to the fisherman with the condition to sell the entire product to them. This same cooperative was able to buy its first own ship in 1939, it was built in Mazatlan.
This way the shrimp fishing industry was starting in Mazatlan along with other species like lobster, oyster and shark. In the 40’s it was a period of adjustment and new industries around fishing emerged, like shipyards, hardware stores, freezers and more advanced fishing fleets .

In the early 50’s the fishing industry was already grown up and mature so it left behind the mining and commercial industry, getting all the attention of the local investment and more fishing companies were created making a strong and highly united industry.
From the 14 existing fishing enterprises; only 2 were for shrimp, and the other 12 were mainly directed to shark and scale. The investment on the fishing industry in 1950 was unbelievable, also in this decade some of the local business men switch from shark to shrimp. In the same year 68 enterprises related with the fishing opened for business: 7 for Industrial frozen, 2 hardware stores specialize in boats, 1 tug, 1 shipyard, 57 for fishing, within 10 years there were 142 as follows: 14 frozen, 1 industrialize, 1 tug, 9 hardware sores, 2 shipyards and 115 for fishing.
By 1951 the shrimp industry in Mazatlan was the biggest in Mexico and the boat owners were in the vanguard.

Now days Mazatlan is considered the Shrimp Capital of the World because of the amount of shrimp that they produce and export to the world; the very well establish infrastructure aloud the industry to export great product at low cost. This title has been earn thanks to the richness of our Ocean, to the visionary investors who believed in a new industry and to the fisherman, hard working people who had made a fishing boat home, the wide ocean their city and fishing their love.

Shrimp is considered one of the most exquisite dishes in the world, very desirable in all styles: Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, etc.
In Mazatlan we are fortunate to have the freshest shrimp; any restaurant will have it in their Menu. You are also able to buy it by kilo (uncooked) and take it home, there is a fish market where you can get shrimp, fish, crab, lobster, oysters, clams, scallops, etc. at very reasonable price and you are sure there is nothing freshest than that.

The life style that prevails in Mazatlan is the life style that many people have dream with, great weather, beautiful beaches, art, culture, history, people, food and affordability. Mazatlan means to be able to LIVE IN PARADISE.

The 5th Marina Mazatlan International Fishing Tournament is coming!!

From the 15th to the 18th of June 2011.

One of the most important Fishing Tournaments is about to start. Expert fisherman will fish for Marlin, Mahi-Mahi, Sail Fish, and Tuna.

Tournament registration fee is $5,500 pesos per line, with a minimum of 3 lines and as maximum of 6 lines per boat. Registration can be done on the 15th at the harbor master office in Marina Mazatlan from 10 AM.

"DIA DE LA MUSICA 2011"

Since early afternoon on Saturday june11 “El Día de la Música” locals and foreign, young and elderly arrived to the streets all along Centro Historico. People wanted to get the best places to be part of this wonderful event.

More than 200 artists participated in 5 different stages with multiple genres, like Jazz, Pop, Zarzuela, Opera, Salsa, Sinaloa Band, Rock, Classical, etc. The night was warm and beautiful, and people were dancing or singing or just enjoying the music, the ambiance and having a cold drink. Also there was Art work indifferent points so people would appreciate paintings from local and guest artists.

This was a terrific job of Cultura Mazatlán and The Centro Historico council, that worked together to make it possible. This is already a tradition in Mazatlan and every year there is more and more people joining. See you next year!!

TURTLE FESTIVAL

The purpose of the festival is to acknowledge the children and young people in Sinaloa about the respect of all marine species especially for the ones in danger as it is the sea turtle.

There is a big change since 1980 when they could only rescue about 800 nests and now that they can rescue 1,200 nests.

There is still a lot more to do because on the beaches there are many depredators looking for food like raccoons, dogs, birds, coyotes, the man it self. The ideal situation is that people will respect them and participate in the conservation of the specie. The species with higher risk are: Carey, Laud and black turtle. If you happen to see a nest in the beach, call 066 or 981 78 15 to report it and they will be save.

There were conferences, art work, dances, shows and movies to make a deep impact in the citizenry so they can commit and be part of it.

Mazatleco Luis Skeen is president of the Mexican Surfing Federation, Mexico’s National Governing Body (NGB), and also founder/president of the Sinaloa State surfing Association (ASES) and the Baja California State surfing association (ASEBC). He’s been surfing since 1968 and has surfed every ocean in the world. Luis was instrumental in bringing the Quiksilver Classic event to Mazatlan.

Q: When did you get interested in surfing?

A: When I was nine years old, I saw Bud Browne’s movie “Endless Summer” and got hooked. I have been surfing ever since.

Q: Why do you like surfing? What has it brought to your life?

A: Surfing makes me feel free and happy. It’s hard to explain. That’s why they say, “Only a surfer knows the feeling”. Surfing has brought me my best friends, lots of travel and a unique life style that allows me to express myself in the face of each wave I ride.

Q: Any tips for beginners or folks wanting to learn?

A: It will always be easier to start with an instructor that can tech you the basics. After that, it’s all on your own. You will learn proportionally to the time you put in, so don’t give up! Believe me, it’s worthy it!

Q: Best surfing experience?

A: Hard to say, because every surf trip is unique and special I would like to say Indonesia and Africa have been the best experiences, with great waves, rich culture and kind people.

Q: Scariest surf experience?

A: A two wave hold down in Puerto Escondido when I was 22 years old. I almost drowned.

Q: Dream surf trip?

A: The Maldive Islands, because I have never been there and I love the Indian Ocean.

Q: Future plans for FMS and the surfing community here in Mexico?

A: We are getting the FMS inside CODEME this year (the Mexican Sports Confederation), so surfing will go mainstream and get more Government support. There is still a long way to go in a Country where everything is football and a state where baseball is a religion, but we’re bringing more quality events to Mexico and won’t stop working to develop the sport.

This is the first Sea Turtle festival, organized by Aquarium Mazatlan and Red de Tortugas de Sinaloa. All the activities will be related with the protection and conservation of the Sea Turtle like: photography, art, movies, dancers and workshop. It is a free event but donations are appreciated. Mazatlan has captivated many people along the years, Tourist after their first visit always come back. Some others just fall in love and want to move in as soon as possible. I can say that the foreign community has become locals, Mazatlan is really their home.

There is a group of foreign Volunteers who wear a blue T-shirt and you can see them any where in Mazatlan: Centro Historico, Malecon, Golden Zone, Down Town, Beaches; their mission is to provide of information or directions to tourists with the only purpose of making them feel welcome and secure. For the blue shirt group Mazatlan is home, so they really care about it, they are also aware that even tough Mazatlecos are great people, friendly and helpful, they feel more comfortable with the familiar language and communication style, tourist trust their countryman opinion.

This shows how much they love Mazatlan.

This initiative emerged after the unfair and untruth portrayal by the international media of Mazatlan as an unsafe place to live or visit, so they started to think on what they could do to help. Some of them have been living in Mazatlan for many years, some full time, some part time, even people who only come for vacation but on regularly bases.
Roger who is a trip advisor, asked if any one would be interested to do something, a week after they were having their fist meeting with 25 volunteers. They share their love for Mazatlan and know Mazatlan is not what it appears to be in the news.
They have made their own shirts and banners, the main purpose is to provide of information and directions to tourist, make them feel welcome so they know what a safe and wonderful place Mazatlan is.

“Mazatlan Tourist Aide Volunteers” as they named themselves, is an independent group, they are not affiliated nor sponsored by any business. Now they are close to 50 volunteers and tourism students from the State University are volunteering as well; The Sinaloa Tourism Office is providing training to the volunteers on places, things people and detailed information to support the great job they are doing unselfish, just one more thing to say to the volunteers:

PAJARITOS FROM MAZATLAN

The sun is setting in a warm afternoon, I hear the sound of the seagulls flying to find a place to sleep, and then I see the slow movements of the lazy Pelicans to do the same. There are a lot people cheerfully having trivial conversation, the fisherman getting ready to go out and the solemnity they do it with looks more like a ritual done for hundreds of years. Now I see the pangas(fishing boats) first dancing a waltz and as they go further they increase the speed until they reach their point of encounter with the fish; then they stop and turn on the big light and wait. After this everything will be up to their expertise, when they see the first fish sparkle in the water they know its time to fish.

This Phenomenon happens only once a year during May, it is now part of the many traditions we have in Mazatlan. This specie is known as California halfbeak (Hyporhamphus rosae) and it is found from the south of California to Peru, but it is in the warm waters of Mazatlan where they reproduce themselves. There are records of their presence since 1880.

In Mazatlan it is a great happening awaited for all locals, every afternoon they go to Playa Norte where all the fisherman take their boats and go out fishing for “Pajaritos”, this fishing has to be done only at night, and to attract the attention of the fish the fisherman make sure to have a big light in the boat and then they extend the fishing net to get them; from the beach it is a fabulous spectacle to see dozens of lights in horizon.

But the locals don’t go only because they like the spectacle; they go because they can get the freshest fish at a very reasonable price. This small fish can reach the maximum size of 11 inches but it is a real delicacy, it is usually cook deep fry and accompaniment (garnish) with beans and fresh tomato, onion, lime and cilantro salsa, you can enjoy it with just made tortillas. Mazatlan is the only place where it is fished so that makes it a very special meal.

There are many things that make Mazatlan unique and fabulous, we have a wonderful weather all year around, history and culture, wonderful beaches for all type of water sport activities, food and friendly people; in Mexico Mazatlan is the tourist destination more affordable than any other. There is no question about the beauty of Mexican music in all different representations. Mexican music pictures and tells the daily and ordinary living of Mexicans; their love, their worries, their friendships, or the sadness of loosing the love of their lives, but also shows the great heart and strong soul that has constituted a wonderful country. Mexican music has different ensembles: from Sinaloa “La Banda” from Sonora “La Redova” from Chiapas “La marimba” from Veracruz “Conjunto Jarocho” from Yucatán “Jarana Yacateca” and of course the very well known around the world “Mariachi”. The Mexican music is a concentration of different influences of other cultures around the world including prehispanic which is the base in this entire new genre born after the conquest in the colonial era. This music has been changing within the years in techniques as well as wardrobe; but one thing has remained and that is the joy and the pride of the Mexican people. The instruments required on each group: Prehispanic – Ocarina, Caracol, 3 hole flout, huehuetl, u drums, kayum, teponaztli, ayoyotes, sonaja. Conjunto Norteño – bass, double bass, accordion, saxophone, drums and redoba. Banda – Clarinet, trombone, tuba, saxophone, trumpet, bass drum, tarola and cymbal. During the golden age of Mexican cinema (1935-1959), there were many stars, but the king of the screen then, and perhaps even still now, was Pedro Infante. A handsome rogue with full lips and an emotionally stirring voice, he lived his life with more abandon than perhaps any character he ever played on screen. He was a Harley Davison –riding womanizer that insisted on doing all of his own stunts, boxed for fun, and was an avid pilot, the last hobby eventually taking his life after no less than three crashes. José Pedro Infante Cruz was born January 18, 1917 in Mazatlan, and raised in Guamuchil. His father Delfino Infante García, was a double bass player in a band. He was the third oldest amongst 14 other siblings, nine that lived to adulthood. Pedro started work at a young age as a carpenter, but always had a special affinity for music. He learned to play string, wind and percussion instruments. This love of all things music led him to use his carpentry skills to built his first guitar, which took two years to complete. The first time Infante sang for the public was at a 1937 Sinaloa festival at the age of 20. The crowd love him, and his wife María Luisa León, encourage him to go to Mexico City to try his luck in the entertainment industry. His first job was singing and acting at a radio station XEB, and he also sang in various concert halls. This led to his first recording, El Soldado Raso, in 1943, followed by approximately 350 more recordings during his career, always with the record label Discos Peerless. In 1942 Infante was offered an acting job on the movie “La Feria de Las Flores”, and a cinematic star burst on the scene. Women fell in love with him and men looked up to him as an example of masculinity. He went on to act and sing in approximately 60 more movies and prior to his death, was in negotiations to begin working in Hollywood with some of the biggest stars of the time, including Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Joan Crawford. He recived many awards, including the Silver Bear of the Berlin International Film Festival for Best Actor, and the Ariel Award given by the Mexican Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences for Best Actor. While married to María, Infante met a dancer, Lupita Torrentera, with whom he had three children, Graciela Margarita, Pedro Infante , Jr. And Guadalupe Infante Torrentera. Later, he had a relationship with Irma Dorantes, a 16-year-old-actress, and their daughter Irma Infante, also had an outstanding career as an actress and singer. This all solidified his reputation as a ladies man, and it was even rumored his death was orchestrated by the President of Mexico for having an affair with his mistress. Infante´s first of three plane crashes occurred in 1947, from which he suffered only minor ijuries. The second was in 1949 near Zitacuaro, Michoacan. He was seriously injured and it was thought he wouldn’t live, but after a surgery in which a steel plate was place in his head, and months of rehabilitation he was entertaining once again. This didn’t discourage him for further flying; on the contrary, he boasted about his invincibility. The morning of April 15, 1957, Infante woke up early in Merida, Yucatán, rode his Harley Davidson to the air field and climbed into the cockpit of his plane. He crashed five minutes after take-off. The remains were identified solely by his bracelet engraved with his name and the winged ornament that symbolized the license of Pedro as an aviator. At 11:15, Manuel Bernal, of the radio station XEW, announced, “Ha muerto Pedro Infante“(“Pedro Infante has died“). Like most of our American icons (for example Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison), rumors abound that Infante didn’t perish. Some say his face was so scarred from the crash that he hid and is living in the Sierra Madre. Another story is he fake his own death to escape a hit the mafia had place on him over an affair with yet another woman. Nonetheless, in Mexican pop culture Infante is still a very popular figure, and his influence can be seen and heard today. The day of Pedro Infante’s death was declared a day of national mourning and four statues were built in his honor throughout Mexico, one of which graces the malecón in Mazatlan. AS long as his songs are played on the radio and his movies are on television, Pedro Infante, indeed, continues to live.

Investing in Mexican real estate will never be more affordable.

Let’s face it- if we believe every thing the media’s saying about Mexico these days, you’d think 110 million citizens in this country are hiding in doors, armed to the teeth, ready for the next invasion from the cartels or the military pursuing them. It’s just not the case, but people love bad news stories and they love to generalize. For those who believe in this nonsense, please hide at home and prepare for the end, which according to the Mayans, is coming in December, 2012. For the rest of you, and particularly those considering Mexico as a retirement destination, the important news is that Mexico has faced its own “perfect storm” in the past few years. Let’s look at what happened. In 2008, the global economy tumble, and vacation home sales in Mexico immediately cooled off, just like real state practically every where in the world. Most foreign investors considering Mexico suddenly didn’t have the equity or access to capital to buy. In 2009 the swine flu kept a lot of tourists away, while in fact it was very minor problem in any of the tourist towns. Once again, potential second-home buyers didn’t arrive in significant numbers. In 2010, the media relentlessly portrayed Mexico as a war zone. What the media usually failed to report was that an estimated 90% of the murders were very bad guys killing very bad guys. Seven per cent of this related deaths were the “good guys” (ie, police, military) being killed by the bad guys. Only 3% were civilian innocent bystanders – a huge number if that was part of your family or community, but a relatively small number compared to what the news would have you believe. These numbers were reported on Fox news a few weeks ago (middle of march) by US DEA official, and what the absolute truth is hard to know it’s probably a fair representation. Once again, foreigners didn’t rush in to buy vacations homes in Mexico. So we have seen three slow years for beachfront and other vacation home real estate sales. Although nationals continue to invest in their own beach retreats, the numbers are not supporting the level of inventory currently available. When supply exceeds demand, prices soften, terms become more advantageous to the buyer and deals are to be had. What the news fails to report is the official numbers of North Americans traveling to Mexico show they are still coming in very large numbers – over 18 million in 2010, according to USA Today. Mexico is investing in “cleaning up its image and improving tourism infrastructure”, and is already the world’s tenth most visited country, according to The Economist. Despite the “perfect storm” it has endured Mexico’s GDP grew by 5.5% in 2010, according to Bloomberg, significantly better than its mighty neighbor to the North. What does the future hold for a country whose economy does well when times are tough? Many economists, bankers and investors are betting that as general global economic conditions improve, Mexico will boom. At this year’s World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Mexico’s President, Felipe Calderon, said Foreign Direct investment flows to Mexico increased 53% in 2010, the largest increase in a decade. Meanwhile, its currency continues to strengthen against the US dollar, its stock market has noted a continuous double-digit growth and its government continues to invest in major infrastructure projects, such as the $3.5 billion dollar Mazatlan-Durango superhighway, due to complete in 2012. Industry experts predict that when the highway is completed, liking the Mexican Golf and Pacific Coast, it will not only open many new trade opportunities, but make Mazatlan an attractive destination for northeast Mexico and the Eastern US, currently relatively untapped markets. A boom is coming! Foreign investment in residential Real Estate will also continue to gain momentum. Prices for coastal real estate in particular will only go up, Baby Boomers and snow birds will most certainly continue to retire and look for warmer (and more affordable) destinations and the inventory will eventually find its equilibrium. Don’t be one of those people kicking themselves for not investing when prices were depressed. At least once in our life time, most of us have said, “if only I’d bought when the price was only…”

From South to North:

PEDRO INFANTE

He was the most famous actor and singer in the Mexican cinema in the 50’s. He was love by women and admired by men since then till now days.
Pedro Infante was born in Mazatlan, his statue is a posthumous tribute to his talent.

EL VENADITO

Mazatlan means “Land of deer” so this bronze statue is the representation of that meaning.

FERRUSQUILLA

A tribute to the beloved musician and composer “José Angel Espinoza Ferrusquilla” now living in Mazatlan.

LA MUJER MAZATLECA

Mazatlecan woman, this statue was donated by the Mexican composer and song writer Gabriel Ruiz, the very famous song Mazatlan was composed by him. This statue is recognition to the warmth and beauty of the Mazatlecan women.

LA SIRENITA

On the rocks in the cliff diver’s plaza, this exquisite monument named “La reina de los mares” representing the marine life and richness of the Ocean.

CHINMOY’S

Pulmonias are only found in Mazatlan, they were out on the streets by the first time in 1965, and they have been very popular with locals and foreign who enjoy very much the ride on an open vehicle to admired Mazatlan wonderful views.

LOLA BELTRAN

Also known as the queen of Mexican singers, it is the pride of Sinaloa since she was born and raised in this land. She traveled all over the world representing the Mexican culture.

LEONES MARINOS

This Californian sea lions are very representative since they are found in their natural habitat in rock formations off shores Mazatlan beaches, as well as they do a wonderful show in the acuarium.

MAZATLECAN FAMILY

It was a beautiful show and the children did a wonderful job. If facts don't lie, is Mexico safer than the U.S. ?

Here comes Easter break again and young people will be young people - high school and college kids will travel to distant places where the drinking age is either less than it is in the U.S. or where authorities don't care to enforce minors' drinking laws. For several decades Mexico has been one such place of choice where the legal drinking age is 18. Mazatlan , Acapulco , Puerto Vallarta and Cancun were the fly to favorite places and Rosarito Beach and Ensenada the favorite drive to places from Southern California . - But not this year, or for that matter neither was it last year.

Our government and the U.S. media have convinced most Americans that Mexico is not a safe place to visit as drug traffickers are fighting it out to see which gang will have the right to sell their illicit drugs to the very group that will not be visiting Mexico . They will have to wait until they return from Easter break to get their Mexican smuggled drugs at home.

But what really struck me was that the preferred country to visit this Easter break in lieu of Mexico is the Dominican Republic . It struck me because Dominica is rated as the number one country with the highest propensity for crime in the world. According to facts gathered by NationalMaster.com, their total crime per 1,000 residents (per capita) is 113.822 -Compared to the U.S. that is 8th in the world in total crimes at 80.0645 per 1000 residents, making chances of being a victim of a crime in Dominica better than 10%, and slightly less than an 8% chance of being a victim in the U.S.

But here is the real clunker - Mexico, the country our government tells us not to visit and the media has a field day reporting any crime be it significant or not to further put the fear of God into staying away from there - well, it ranks 39th in total crime in the world with a per capita of slightly less than 13 crimes per 1000 residents that is a 1.3% chance of being a victim of crime in Mexico.

So Mexico is out, Dominica is in, yet the chances of being a crime victim there is greater than in the U.S. and the chances of being a crime victim in the U.S. is greater than in Mexico . But, for our own safety we need to stay out of Mexico .

Have you ever felt like you're being duped but you can't quite put your finger on why - what's the motive? Is it to keep us from facing some bitter truths? We keep reading how crime is down, how safe we are compared to most other parts of the world. But is it true?

In one of the only bright spots due to its recent gang related murders, Mexico , on a per capita, ranks as more dangerous than the U.S. occupying No. 24 and Mexico No. 6 in the world, but in total number of murders the U.S. is No. 5 and Mexico No. 6.

In fact, much of the crime data per capita 1000 population suggests that in many respects Mexico is safer than the U.S.: in assaults the U.S. ranks No. 6, Mexico No. 20; burglaries the U.S. No. 17, Mexico No. 34; car thefts U.S. No. 9, Mexico No. 22; fraud U.S. No. 18, Mexico No. 29; Rape (Canada No.5), U.S. No. 9, Mexico No. 17.

No doubt that at the expense of Mexico we are being duped. Is it to hide our insatiable appetite for illicit drugs and cheap labor, and so by pointing the finger of guilt to the biggest supplier of both we exculpate our actions or at minimum pacify our own guilt?

Maybe it's time for "the home of the free, and land of the brave" to take note.

Jellyfish (also known as jellies or sea jellies or Medusozoa) are free-swimming members of the phylum Cnidaria. Jellyfish have several different morphologies that represent several different cnidarian classes including the Scyphozoa (over 200 species), Staurozoa (about 50 species), Cubozoa (about 20 species), and Hydrozoa (about 1000–1500 species that make jellyfish and many more that do not).[1][2] Medusa is another word for jellyfish, and refers specifically to adult jellyfish. Cosalá a Magic Town and a Cultural Patrimony of Mexico

Cosalá is a pueblo nestled in the Sierra of Sinaloa equidistant from both Mazatlan and Culiacan. It was originally named Quetzalla (Place of beautiful evenings) and then named the ungainly name of the Royal Mines of Our Lady of the Eleven Thousand Virgins of Cosalá, before it was shortened to simply Cosala. It was officially founded in March of 1562 by Amador López; however the region was previously inhabited by Tepehuanes, Sabaibos, Acaxes and Ximimies Indians since time immemorial. We know this because of the petroglyphs and cave paintings in the area. Casalá was named one of the world’s wealthiest mining centers by Spain back in the old days. This was due to the presence of the well-yielding of San Jose de las bocas, Cajón de Tapacoya, Guadalupe de los Reyes, La Cienega and Nuestra Señora. It was once Sinaloa´s most important commerce center.
The boom of Cosala attracted numerous foreigners, particularly Spanish, who decided to settle in this promising place. This sparked an even larger social and commercial boom also attracted adventurers. Heraclio Bernal, “El Rayo de Sinaloa” was the most famous and among the first. Cosala was the Government seat in 1824. Don Francisco Iriarte Conde acted as Vice Governor, but never became Governor since he was elected by the people which didn’t mesh well with the Spanish Government’s plans. Two other Governors of Sinaloa have come from Cosala: Leopoldo Sánchez Celis and Jesús Aguilar Padilla.
The people from Cosalá have fought forever to preserve their culture, customs, traditions and the beauty of their town. They want their cultural legacy to be recognized and they welcome tourist who are interested in what they have to offer. In 2000 during the presidency of Ernesto Zedillo, Cosalá was recognized as an official part of Mexico’s Patrimony. With the arrival of native son and Governor to state power, plans were reactivated to rescue Cosalá from being forgotten. He and the locas worked intensely and on October 5, 2005, the national Government bestowed the coveted title of Magic Pueblo on Cosalá. Two years after this stupendous happening, Cosalá has achieve important advances in rescuing big old houses, streets, traditions, culture and has become a magnet for tourists all over the globe.
The tourist boom of Cosalá is generating new investments in the core of the pueblo and is sparking the developments of other attractions around the area as Vado Hondo, Mineral de Nuestra Señora and San José de las Bocas. The Orchids and The Exotic Flowers of Sinaloa

Sinaloa has an amazing biodiversity. The ecosystems vary from offshore islands, wetlands (which are confined in the more of 650 Km. of cost line), deciduous and sub-deciduous forest, pine-oak forest, etc. It is in the deciduous forest where the highest concentration of an impressive plant biodiversity remains, and many of them are endemic species. Such is the case of the gorgeous pink orchid Barkeria Dorotheae that blooms during the rainy season in the most rugged areas of the Western Mountains Ranged or Sierra Madre Occidental. This orchid belongs to genus that has 15 species of epiphyte orchids which are found in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panamá. Epihyptes have well developed roots which attach themselves to a tree for support and also to benefit from the tree’s nutrients. I have seen these orchids grow on a palo de Brasil tree but they also are found on the Tecomate tree. The large green fruits of the tree make a striking contrast with the intense pink of this orchid. It is believed that orchids are eternal since in nature the life of the orchid is connected with the tree that houses them. There are known plants that were connected half a century ago and they are still growing healthy and flowering in many collections.

Another colorful flower that makes their presence in the deciduous forest is the poinsettia belonging to the genus Euphorbia spp of the Euphorbiaceae family. The Spanish name is Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) and is given since the flowering coincides with the Chistmas season. This flower is native from Mexico and it can be known by the following names as well: Pascua, Sijoyo, Flor de Bandera or flor de Santa Catalina. It blooms from November to February in the most humid areas with the abundant vegetation such as cliffs and Canyons. This shrub can grow between 3 and 5 meters and the intense reddish leaves often captives the observer. This flower became known to the rest of the world during the colonial era when people would adorn the Churches during Christmas services.
During the dry season on the edge of the hills you can see the bright flowers of the Rosa Amarilla and Clavellina trees. The bark of the Rosa Amarillais in demand by folk healers and many people of the communities use the same tree to cure diabetes and other illnesses. Wildlife such as the White-tailed deer benefit from the flowering trees and loves to snack on the Clavellina and Palo Alto flower.
The spider water lilies flower during the rainy season. This exotic plant is strictly aquatic and can be admire along the river banks and streams.
This is just a small sampling of the exuberant botanical beauty that Sinaloa possesses and some of the flowers that you may see in the deciduous forest. There is always something new to see and admire when we enter the rugged mountains of our State. The orchids are protected by PROFEPA, SEMARNAT or CONANP (Government organizations). Sinaloa is caring more for the environment and organizations are looking to create and preserve more wildlife in areas where there is high biodiversity.

Driving to Paradise

When you cross the border you will be asked to identify yourself and you will be issued a visitors Visa, valid for six months. When you live Mexico, the United States immigration service will require you to present a valid US or Canadian Passport to re-enter.

You will have to make a deposit of 200 USD on your registered vehicle to encourage you to bring the car back with you. The customs agents prefer a major non-Mexican issued credit card. You can pay in cash but it must be in dollars. When you leave Mexico, your deposit will be cheerfully refunded. You should also purchase an insurance rider at the border to cover you in Mexico. Shop around on the internet and purchase when you cross. You must carry a valid driver’s license.

It is just as safe to drive on Mexico’s “major” highways as it is in the United States or Canada. If you are polite and can say “good morning, good afternoon, please & thank you” in Spanish , you will find that everyone you encounter will be more than gracious and try to help you even when you can’t converse in the national language. Mexican people are genuinely friendly by nature.

The “autopista” is Mexico’s version of the turnpike. It provides a limited access environment most of the way to Mazatlan except when going through towns and cities. There are few loops or bypasses. The speed limits on the Autopista range from 80Km (50mph) to 110Km (70mph). Stops signs are red and white octagons that say “Alto”. A handheld translator or book might come in handy. There are toll booths along the way to pay your “Cuota” and this stop can also give you a break from the journey because you’ll usually find rest rooms and snack bar. Having Mexican pesos to pay the toll is best. They always give you a “Nota” (receipt), but count your change.

Make sure you fill up your tank at reasonable intervals; in other words, half-full is a good idea until you get more acquainted with this route. “Pemex” gas stations (the only choice) are more abundant these days, but just to be safe remember to fill up when you are in a populated area. The choices in grade are Magna or Premium. Most passengers vehicles run fine on Magna (regular). Make sure the pump is set at “0” before the attendant starts pumping. It is best to have Mexican pesos available to pay and always ask for a “nota” and count your change. Some stations, not all, accept major Credit Cards. Gas prices in Mexico increase a couple of cents every month to keep up with inflation. There are no spikes in prices and you will find that the cost to fill your tank is now a lot lower here than it is at home.

If you get hungry or tired during the drive, your best bet for a good restaurant or a clean and comfortable Motel is in the cities along the route.

Carnaval de Mazatlán 2011 is bringing back a wonderful tradition “El baile de Facha y Fantasía”. The Cultura of Mazatlan department in coordination with the enthusiastic board of the Orfanatorio de Mazatlan are in charge of making this come to reality, all founds raised will be to benefit Orfanatorio Mazatlan.

This famous ball was for many years very representative of the Carnaval in Mazatlan, but unfortunate and as time went by it disappeared; well this year and after 111 years from been created, is arising from the memory to the colorful reality and welcome by the enthusiasm and festive mood that distinguish the Mazatlecos. Between costumes and royalty

Don Miguel Valadez (the city chronicler) described: during the very first carnivals everybody wear costumes and masks they made jokes and their happiness made a new word in which they lived for a few days. People from the area and foreigners came by ships, wagons or horses seeking for that brief but intense world of fun party.
In 1900 Mazatlan had its first Carnaval Queen, a beautiful North American Wilfrida Farmer (Winnie as everybody called her). Winnie made a magnificent entrance to the city on a tram pull by horses and as companion Teodoro Maldonado along with the entourage, the happy ministers and a whole operetta company. On Tuesday’s Mardi grass parade she was on a beautiful black steed, she was a magnificent horse woman.

That year was celebrated the very first masked ball in Círculo Benito Juarez across the street from Plazuela Machado, the article was written by the poet Don Esteban Flores who was also the director of the news paper El Correo de la Tarde.

Wetlands In Mazatlan and Its Surroundings

Along the Sinaloa coastline there are large wetlands, urban wetlands, estuaries and coastal lagoons. All of these ecosystems are of great importance to the migrating aquatic and waterfowl, since they serve as their, resting and refugee areas they depend upon during their long migration along the Pacific route. There are more than 50 species of migrating birds that strictly depend on these important refugees. For birdwatchers, wetlands provide some of the most exiting habitats because they contain all sorts of spectacular species of birds, such as teals, ducks, goose, pelicans, cormorants, herons, ibises, spoonbills, shorebirds, oystercatchers, etc. When one goes birding to the wetlands, there are well-defined habitats and this makes it a unique experience since we can learn about bird’s social behavior, feeding tactics, and their cycles of annual migration of the different species.
Within the 18 municipalities of our State there are a great number of wetlands of varying sizes. Two of the largest bays that are important nesting areas for the Branta bernicla are Santa María and la Reforma. One of the most striking birds that visit us from the north is the American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynochos). With a wingspan of 3 meters, this is one of the North america’s largest and there are few more spectacular sights than a flock of White Pelicans wheeling and turning in unison. These birds nest mostly in colonies at large lakes in the interior west and then migrate to lagoons and estuaries along the coast of the southern US and Mexico for the winter. Unlike the coastal Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis), which dives from the air, White Pelicans feed while they are swimming, putting their heads and bills under water to scoop up fish and crustaceans. Often they gather in large groups and they work as a synchronized team. Before sunrise, they look for the feeding grounds, where they congregate sometimes more than 1000 individuals, resembling a huge white patch in the estuaries. Local fisherman names these birds “Borregones” or “Canadian Ducks”.

La Laguna del Camarón is the remains of the El Sabalo estuary one of the last urban natural refugees of the black-bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna Autumnalis), where a colony of more than 1000 birds used to inhabit less than 2 years ago and 10 years ago, an active breeding colony of approximately 80 pairs of Black Skimmers Rynchops niger lived. The American White Pelican could also been seen in large flocks in this estuary. These are just a few examples of the resident and migratory avifauna that once existed and depended on the former El Sabalo estuary.
As the learned Edward Wilson mentioned: “One can say that in each country there are three different type of richness: material, cultural and biological. The first two we understand very well because they are substance of our daily lives. The biological richness is taken with much less seriousness. This is a serious strategic mistake and one that will be more regrettable as time goes by”.
The only urban wetland that has been preserved thanks to the efforts of conservation biologists is El Yugo estuary. This small body of brackish water shelters more than 180 species of resident and migratory birds.

One of the most relaxing places to spend a great evening is the plaza outside the Angela Peralta Theater. Any evening of the year you will encounter out doors dinning in the many restaurants that have opened around the plaza Machado, but the real draw is the almost nightly performances presented by the “Centro Municipal de las Artes”. The only odd thing about this scenario is that the quality of the performances is extremely high while the price of the tickets is so low. How do they do it? What you hear and see are performances by Orchestras, Opera Companies, Ballet Companies, various ensembles and even name entertainers who are supported on stage by musicians, singers and dancers who are actually students of the institution. The Theater is almost acoustically perfect; the stage is deep enough to handle very large shows and the fact that is an exact restoration from the 1800’s amazes anyone. It is air conditioned and the seats are very comfortable.
The Mazatlan fine arts cultural center opened its doors November 06 1989; the city ancestors had a vision for a local institution that could train talented young people in the fields of music, dance, voice, theater, painting and sculpting. Their dream was to create a school where kids could enter during childhood and graduate as adult professionals in their artistic regimen.
When it began, the cultural arts academic courses were taught at two separate locations. One was comprised of classes that taught classical ballet, painting and sculpting while “Enrique Patrón de Rueda” music school was at a second facility. During the second year the “voice school” was established with the support of two famous musical icons of Sinaloense music who lived in Mazatlan. The youth symphonic Orchestra and the “Angela Peralta Chorus” were also inaugurated.
By 1993, these artistic activities schools were combined with brand new rehearsal rooms and studios right next to the Angela Peralta Theater. The “Municipal Fine Arts Center” was officially born at this time. This consolidation of the schools was possible because of the ample support of local, state and national endowments and public revenues. The new Municipal Fine Arts Center extended its artistic curriculums to include folkloric ballet, theater, cinema and literature. These educational classes produced young performers with the ability to join high quality ensembles like the “Infantile Chorus”, the “Regional Band” and the “Youth Symphony Orchestra”.
In jus a few years, the consolidation has produced a professional school of music, a professional school of contemporary dance and a professional school of voice. Professional Performance Degrees are bestowed on graduates in each of these three regimens.

The Municipal Center of the Arts is located in one of the most famous historical sites in Mazatlan. The structure it occupies today was once one of the first hotels in Mazatlan. Later, it was the residence of Don Manuel Blond, an industrialist who had a theater annex constructed on the property. Later, the house was sold by Blond’s widow and it became the Iturbide Hotel.

In August of 1883, one of the most famous lyric Soprano’s in Mexico history, Diva Angela Peralta, “The Mexican Nightingale”, passed away in suite 10 of the same building that still carries her name 125 years later.

By the end of the 19th century, the second floor of the building became the “Mazatlan Casino” where the elite met daily. The ground floor served as offices for a variety of businesses.
By 1965, the building was turn into an auto mechanics workshop by the mechanic Don Miguel Ramirez Urquijo, locally famous for creating the first “Pulmonia”.

The cultural Arts Center has truly become a magnet that draws concerts lovers to the hart of the historic district. On any given evening you will find people from all walks of life as well as nationality’s flocking to the numerous bistros’ surrounding the Plaza Machado, which is right in front of the institution, for casual dinners and drinks. They come for the atmosphere. They come for the cuisine and cocktails. They come for the music played by sidewalk performers. But most of all they come because this is a place that seems to energize your soul. It is a magical environment that celebrates creativity and harmony. It is unique to this area of Mexico as well as to the world.

When to get a FM2 or FM3 Visa

Mexico is a friendly Country and its doors are wide open to welcome foreign to visit short and long-term or to live full time in this beautiful Country. As any Country there are some regulations to follow in the benefit of the Citizenry.
There are different types of Visas that are needed to visit Mexico and depending on the purpose of the visit.
If you are just on short period vacation as tourist you apply for FMM Visa which allow you to visit Mexico for short period of time (less than 6 months) and you can get it at the port entry or with the Airline you are traveling with.

If you are planning to stay in Mexico more than 6 months then you should request a FM3 Visa-Long-term non immigrant Visa. This is a renewable long-term visa and allows you for a non immigrant long-term residency. In order to have a FM3 Visa approve is necessary to be financially able to support your self while you are in Mexico or to prove a steady income for your Country. There is no maximum or minimum amount. When you get your FM3 visa it may be renew for 4 more years (5 years total); then when this time expires another FM3 Visa has to be requested and will be valid for another 5 years (renewable every year).
You can apply for a FM3 Visa with the Mexican Consulate if you aren’t in Mexico or in Mexico when you are for a short stay and using a FMM Tourist Visa.

The FM2 Visa is requested if you want to live in Mexico for longer time periods, more than a year or permanent residency or Mexican Citizenship.
It is not mandatory to have a FM3 Visa before or in order to have a FM2 Visa, and in case you had one it does not apply as reference in the qualification time period. If your main purpose is to get the long-term residency or the Mexican Citizenry then you should request it as soon as possible so your qualification period starts counting.
When you have a FM2 Visa and you have approved the qualification period you are eligible to apply for full residency, once is accepted you obtain full rights and responsibilities as any Mexican; Naturalized Citizens also can vote in Mexican elections. After this you can apply for Mexican for the Mexican Citizenship, but you don’t have to you can have a FM2 visa indefinitely. You don’t have to give up your national passport either you have the FM2 or applied for Citizenship.
If you have a FM2 Visa and leave Mexico staying away for more than 2 years or 5 years in a period of 10 years you lose your permanent residency.

The majority of people who request for this Visa are:
Retirees- People over 50 years old who wants to participate in non-remunerative activities and are receiving founds from their home Country, like a pension, investments or a fixed income.
Investors- People who are interested to invest in Mexico, for Industry or Services.
Professionals- Qualified professionals can have their certificates validated by the Mexican Consulate in your Country and request an immigration Visa. Same for qualified Technicians or Scientist, Mexico issue a Visa that aloud them to live and work in Mexico under the sponsorship of a foreign Company.
Artist and Sports- This people should apply for a FM2 long-term Visa, but each case is considered individually.

From many points in the city you can see the tall building that emerge from the rest of the houses, a very characteristic building that is an Icon for local people; 49 meters high and at the top floor there is a museum ready to tell all the stories and anecdotes in which it has been a witness and some times the center of the story, you can also enjoy a wonderful view of the city from that high. That building is “La Cervecería” (“The Brewery”); The worldwide famous Cerveza Pacífico is made there and they are open to any body who wants to tour the facilities they offer guided tours.
Cerveza Pacífico is a Mexican beer Pilsner Style. The Brewery opened its door for the first time in 1900 and the original owners were business men from Germany that were already established in Mazatlan. Their names: Jorge Claussen, Germán Evers, Emilio Phillipi, César Boelken, Federico Marburg y Jacob Schuele. They started with a capital of $300,000 pesos and they had the latest equipment in those years so they could produce 175,000 liters per month.
Cerveza Pácifico now is owned by Modelo group since they join in 1954. The brewery is still working and mainly produces Pacífico beer.
It is considered one of the best in Mexico due to its character, taste, body, aroma and beautiful golden light and bright color.
It still leads the market, and because of its quality now it’s recognized internationally. Pacífico beer is exported to United Estates since 1985. Grupo Modelo exports 5 kinds of beer from its brand to over 160 Countries.
There is a monument in the Mazatlan’s Boardwalk to commemorate the first 100 years of Cerveza Pacifico in Mazatlan.

Since the Spanish Conquest new ingredients were added, meat like pork and cow coming from Europe. For this interesting fusion, Mexican food is considered one of the most delicious Worldwide. Some of the conquistadors also took some of their main spices and ingredients to the rest of the world so there is a lot of influence of the Mexican food in the International Gastronomy as well.
In the last 2 decades emerged a new style of Mexican food which is The Gourmet Mexican Cuisine or New Mexican Food as is called, this new trend is bringing new energy to the traditional Mexican food.
Food and Cooking are a very important in Mexico, and can be the center of social life. It is an event that binds friendships, reinforce family bonds; even important business transactions take place around Dinner or Lunch.

Some examples of traditional dishes Sinaloenses are: Pollo a la Plaza, Asado a la Plaza, Pozole, Menudo, the wonderful tortilla soup, chilaquiles, enchiladas and of course sea food, especially since Mazatlan is considered internationally the Shrimp Capital.
At any home it is common to find marlin stew or shrimp ceviche, Pescado sarandeado, or mahi mahi garlic filet, breaded shrimp, shrimp empanadas, shrimp brochette and more; any of this dishes are serve with rice or guacamole on site. Last night October 12, the first game of the season 2010-2011 took place in Culiacán; the teams playing TOMATEROS from Culiacán Vs. VENADOS from Mazatlán. The score was Venados 3 – Tomateros 1.
Tonight October 13, will be the first game in Los Venados Home Stadium- in Mazatlan. If you are in Mazatlan during this time of the year don’t miss enjoying a base ball game supporting the local team, you will have lots of fun.

Venados de Mazatlan is a baseball team in the Mexican Pacific League. Based in the city of Mazatlan, Los Venados enjoyed their greatest success in 2005 when they won the Caribbean World Series. The Mexican team is home to many stars like Miguel Ojeda, Edgar Gonzalez, Roberto Saucedo, Heber Gomez, etc.
People from around the world enjoy very much watching the games and mixing with the locals which is a great experience.
Teodoro Mariscal Stadium, home of los Venados, has a capacity for 12,000 people and Cerveza Pacífico is the official sponsor of the team.

Pulmonías from Mazatlan

All the people that has visited Mazatlan are surprise by the very picturesque public transportation that there is in the city, everybody knows and love “PULMONIAS” (Pneumonia).
Pulmonía is the name Mazatlecos have given them. Why? To answer you that, we are going to make a trip to the past, to 1962.
During that year a local business man was giving form to an old idea, the idea of having a popular transportation that were characteristic from the city and that in some way replaced the already gone “ARAÑAS” (old wood wagons tide by horses) that were old times Taxis.
He saw then a 3 wheel little car in a garage that it wasn’t in use any more, as soon as he saw it he knew it was what he was looking for. These cars were golf cars Cushman brand and were made in Nebraska.
This visionary man is Don Miguel “Chicharo” Ramirez, he knocked on many doors, visited many banks asking for a loan to start a business, but money was denied by all thinking this wasn’t a good idea; he didn’t back up on his plans, he was decided to succeed. He traveled to Nebraska and talked to the board and for his surprise they agreed to finance 8 cars, then he had to import them from United Estates to Mazatlan and put them in a big garage in Constitución street # 606. Don Miguel Valadez Lejarza a friend of his made a fiberglass structure and some changes and adjustments.
Now the main thing was to get all the permits authorized so they could go out to the streets. One day the Governor of Sinaloa Mr. Leopoldo Sánchez Celis was in town, so “El Chicharo” drove on one of his 3 wheels little cars and parked in front of the Hotel where the Governor was staying. The governor was astonished by this cute and estrange vehicle but he liked them very much and told “El Chicharo” to finish 16 and he was going to help him, after all they were friends. Just before he ended his period as Governor, he authorized and signed all the permits for the cars to be able to circulate as a public transportation.
On December the 20th of 1965 the 16 cars went out to the streets, on something like a parade and “El Chicharo” playing the accordion celebrating the event.
They were such a success that on the first year “El Chicharo” wanted to import another 16. These little cars were accepted since the beginning by the locals; however, there were problems with the Taxi unions and city buses and they started a big discredit campaign against the new little cars and when they saw people getting in on one of those, they told them they would get sick by using them for been open cars, they would get Pulmonía (pneumonia). So people started calling them “PULMONIAS”.
The good relationship that “El Chicharo” had with the new Governor helped him to have the success that he achieved and within 3 years he had already 100 pulmonías working.
They were accepted at the beginning because they were original and cute little cars, but then they were also giving a good and inexpensive service.
This company grew up very fast, and soon they had their own Service Center in which they had a department for carpentry, smithy, soldiering, mechanic, wheel repair and more. The size of the center was of 1000 m2 (10763.91 sq ft), and it was located in the corner of Constitución and Carnaval street, where now is located the city’s art school.
The employees made a union and asked the Governor for support so they could get some of the vehicles with their corresponding permits. This was considered by “El Chicharo” and other citizens as unfair and violating his rights of owning an enterprise and work the free market.
On April 4th 1975, all the pulmonías were lock for a month, leaving the citizens without the very popular transportation. The same year on may 28th and without reaching any agreement “El Chicharo” got the order by the Government to give back to the State all the permits to canceled them; then the government started issuing provisional permits to the Union. And this way the history of the pulmonías got into a new phase.
An administrator was assign to control and be responsible of the operation and work of the Pulmonías Union.
The job they did was so bad that from the 110 pulmonías that they got at the beginning, there were only 24 left. Their next step was to let the Union work by it self. And they got into another phase in the history of the transportation in Mazatlan.
They made some new changes and variations to the original model trying to keep it the closest to the basic and important characteristics; the 3 wheels were replace by 4 to make it more stable and the Cushman chassis was replace for a Volkswagen to lower down the cost of production.
In many other place in Mexico have tried to imitate this peculiar transportation but they haven’t been successful in arranging the permits, besides Pulmonías are register at the Mexican Institute of the Industrial Property.

I’m sure next time you see a Pulmonía you will see more than just a fast, easy and fun way to get to your destination, now you know a little bit more about the fascinating life of the great Mazatlecos.
And don’t forget when you take one to enjoy the wind blowing your hair and the cool breeze touching your face and see Mazatlan from a different perspective from an open window as it is everything in Mazatlan a wide open window to new life experiences that you can reach just by extending your arms and opening you hands. Friday Sept. 24 – Juan Carlos, Christian, Jesús Adrian and Freddy had a fun fishing trip on board of a 28’ Super panga form Marina Costa Bonita Fishing fleet, In the picture there is one mahi-mahi with them, but they got 26 more. One of the great things is the fish cleaning facilities the best in Mazatlan, and then is your choice to have your catch cooked at the Sea Farer or vacuum sealed it and froze it, we have both services.

What you see here are named bally-hoo and the one with the wings it is known by the fishermen as bird fish and when you go out fishing you can see them actually flying above the water it is incredible to see that. Well bally-hoo and bird fish are the favorite food for Mahi-mahi, Marlin and Sail fish and they are use as bait by the experience fisherman and they go and get them very often so they can have the freshest bait in the area. That is why in our fishing fleet they always have the best catch.

They left very early in the morning and went out about 10 miles and started seen a lot of Mahi-Mahi, they had to come back early because they run out of space and beer both very important issues. They went out with Chapi one of the good ones form our fishing fleet. Great Job Guys!

They are crustaceans, more than 4,000 different spices are known around the world, most of them live in or close to the water but some of them get to the water only to reproduce. This type of crabs have 5 pares of feet and are able to walk fast but to the side and to swim. They use the pincer to grab food, fight for territory or to courtship. This type I have never see before only at Marina Costa Bonita and these are the most beautiful I have ever seen. They are cute!

Mexican Independence

The Mexican independence started with Miguel Hidalgo’s call on September 16 in 1810. It was a war against the Spanish oppression, The Spanish kingdom was the only authority in the New Spain (now Mexico), also French representatives arrived to Mexico and the Spanish were agree to give the territory to the French as part of an agreement between countries but that only brought more disagreement to the Indians, criollos and mestizos, that wanted the independence of their country, and be treated as humans as equals and to have a government by their own. At the beginning Hidalgo had as an army nothing more than a bunch of Indians with no fire guns only rocks and sticks but they had so much anger contained so they didn’t care.
The independence war did not finish until September 27, 1821, but Spain didn’t recognize their independence until 1836. The group that fought against Spain were known as Insurgentes or Trigarantes, the history recognizes as heroes several men for their valuable intervention some of them are: Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Ignacio Allende, José Ma. Morelos, Felix Calleja, Guadalupe Victoria, Vicente Guerrero, Francisco Xavier Mina, Agustín de Iturbide. Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez and Leona Vicario are the women that history recognizes and are grateful with for their brave and important roll in the Independence.
Mexican celebrate Independence day not the day war finished but the day it started wich is September 16 and this year Mexico is celebrating 200 years of independence. ¡ VIVA MEXICO !

This duck is from this area in Sinaloa, and is only found here, a few years ago it was in danger to be extinguish, but the government helped by making boxes on the trees to put their nests. This duck in particular, makes its nest on the trees, not on the floor and when the baby duck is ready to leave the nest it jump from the tree to the floor, from there they follow their parents by foot to the nearest lagoon were they raise them. They are usually found at bird island wich is located in front of the beach shores in Mazatlan, and come to El Camarón lagoon, we are lucky to see them every year in Marina Costa Bonita and use our fresh water lagoon in their way to the Island or El Camarón lagoon. According to the Historians this game is a heritage form the Aztecs and its name in Aztec is Ullamaliztli. Arqueological items that were found in the Olmeca zone, tell us that this game exists since 1400 years before Christianity. But lately other probes have been found and show Ulama fields form 1,200 years before Christ. Its practice was related with spirituality and a warrior status.
Ulama game, was considered as the fight between two forces where only one of them will prevail, Day and Night, Courage and Cowardice, Life and Death.
The Spanish colonizers and Catholic priests, considered this pagan game as brutal, savage, even diabolic; so in 1585 it was forbidden to play it again.
The game fields were known as “Tachtlis” but now they are called “Taste”. There are different type of game disciplines, with the forearm, with a mallet and the most spectacular with the hip; this last one is more popular because it was consider tougher but also more esthetic. The size of the “Taste” in Sinaloa is of 65 meters (213.25 feet) long and 4 meters (13.12 feet) wide and the ball weights 4 Kilograms (8.81 pounds) and has a diameter of 8 inches, the process of fabrication has keep a touch of mystery.
The main purpose of the game, is to keep the ball inside the field with out touching it with hands, only with the hip; and send it to the other side of the field to score. The hips are protected by dressing, leather and a belt known as “Chimalo”.

Construction by Mexican firm TRADECO, has required 103,000 tons of cement and almost 17,000 tons of steel.
This bridge joins the states of Durango and Sinaloa and removes the need for drivers to negotiate a very dangerous stretch of highway known as the Devil’s Backbone.

North of Mazatlan there is a beach named Playa Ceuta, a virgin beach where experts collect the eggs turtle and incubated them for aprox. 45 days, after they borned they let them free to get back to the ocean being such a wonderful moment after seeing them slowly going into the water.

From Clevaland Ohio, Kurt and Susan had a great experience fishing with Nautica Costa Bonita fishing fleet. Kurt catch a blue marlin and Susan a strip marlin and release a sail fish. They went out fishing on boar of a super panga named Johny Bravo with captain Juanito and guess what?

They are going again on Saturday. Some people have asked what do they do with all that fish?

Well, the fisherman take home some of it, but most of it is donated to the orphanage and other charity institutions. So they double enjoy it by fishing and by helping others.

We have been asked to write about our recent sailing trip south to Tenacatita Bay and Barra de Navidad. First let me introduce ourselves, we are Danice and Larry, residents of Marina Costa Bonita. We sailed our 41' sailboat, Ladara Star to Mexico in the fall of 2002. Every year since during the winter six months of the year, we have lived aboard her and cruised the Mexican West Coast from San Carlos to Zihuatanejo. Mazatlan has always been one of our favorite destinations and in the spring of 2008 we started thinking about our long term commitment to wintering in Mexico and alternatives to our then current lifestyle, so we start looking into Mazatlan real estate. Danice on one of her morning walks stumbled on Marina Costa Bonita. One of the kindly guards let her inside and she immediately noticed while the building was still in the initial stages of construction, the walks and gardens were already well established and beautiful, plus there was the possibility of a marina. She later convinced Larry to look what she had discovered and the rest is history. We took a chance and invested in an unfinished building with a marina with no docks. We returned October 31, 2008 with a cargo trailer full of furniture hoping everything would be ready. Well it wasn't, they were one hour late! Hard to complain about that. The following spring the marina was finished and we moved our sailboat, Ladara Star, into her new slip. It is quite a feeling to look out of our Marina condo window with the pool and gardens below and to see your sailboat resting in its slip.

We are have altered our lifestyle somewhat with the purchase of our Marina condo, but we have not given up sailing. This February, Xavier, the harbormaster, helped us slip our dock lines and Ladara Star headed out of Nautica Costa Bonita and Mazatlan. Our destination: Tenacatita Bay. It is about a 300 mile voyage with the first leg being about 180 miles. At 5 to 6 knots that means 30-36 hours of travel including traveling at night. The seas were still flat and calm when we arrived at the entrance to Banderas Bay(Puerto Vallarta) so we sailed on easily rounding Cabo Corrientes , a mountainous promontory that is noted for its windy conditions and rough seas.

The next morning, 49 hours out of Mazatlan, we arrived in Tenacatita, tired, but happy to have returned to one of our favorite areas of Mexico. There were 25-35 boats already at anchor and due to recent rains, the hillside was alive with blooming trees. We anchored here for almost 2 weeks. Ladara Star is a cruising boat and well equipped to stay in remote areas with no facilities for extended periods of time. Solar panels help generate electricity for her batteries, refrigeration preserves our food, a watermaker converts seawater to drinking water, and radios and cellular connects us to the outside world and other boats. In the mornings we usually had boat projects or reading to occupy our time. From the cockpit we were entertained by dolphins making their daily rounds. One morning we witness whales breaching out in the bay. In the afternoon we generally walked the mile long beach and joined other cruisers at the beach palapa for bocci ball, Mexican Train (dominoes) and cold refreshments.

On the 27th of March we awoke to tapping on our hull, and news that a tsunami warning had been issued for area area following a massive earthquake in Chile. We had over 3 hours to prepare and rapidly the fleet in Tenacatita pulled their anchors and headed out to sea and for deeper/safer waters. The tsunami passed under us unnoticed, but when we returned to the bay, we saw evidence of 1-2' rise in sea-level.

A few days later we once again pulled anchor and made the 2.5 hour trip to the village of Barra de Navidad. A beautiful but touristy village located across from the Grand Bay Hotel. Behind the village and the hotel is a large, but shallow lagoon that is accessible via a narrow channel. Having been there many times before, we threaded our way down the channel cautiously without going aground and anchor along with about 35 other boats. We stayed in Barra Lagoon for about a week enjoying some of the good restaurants, doing some planned mechanical repairs, and waiting for the arrival of our guest and long time friend, Fred.

Once we introduced Fred to the sights and sounds of Barra and had a swim in the fabulous Grand Bay Hotel pools, we sailed back to Tenacatita Bay so Fred could experience one of our favorite places in Mexico. The boat census in Tenacatita had dropped dramatically with only 15 boats anchored in the Bay. It had also changed with power boats, including 4 large motor yachts (100'+), now equaled in number to sailboats.

Eventually our visit in Tenacatita had to end and with a good weather forecast we weighed anchor and headed north towards Banderas Bay. Most of the day the weather was mild, but around 3 pm we started to experience winds that gradually increased to 20+ knots and were right on our nose. Not very comfortable! Since we still had 12 hours to travel before we once again rounded Cabo Corrientes, we decide the better part of valor was to turn around. It was a fast 3 hour downwind sail. Just after sunset we pulled into to Chamela, our protected anchorage for the night. With another good forecast, we left Chamela early the next morning just as the sun was creeping over the mountains. The winds and the seas were more cooperative and we rounded Cabo Corrientes without incident shortly there after the sun disappeared into the sea, but we still had another 4-5 hours to go. It is best to arrive at a new port during daylight hours. Unfortunately this is not always possible. Our destination was La Cruz de Huanacaxtle in the norther corner of the bay. About 11 pm we finally arrived and very carefully looked for a place to anchor. In the dark it is difficult to distinguish shore lights from boat anchor lights. With radar and a sharp lookout, we found a place to drop our anchor for the night.

The next morning we discovered they were having a special reduced rate in the marina, so we decided to treat ourselves for a couple of nights and wash down the boat. Last year while visiting here, we discovered a great German restaurant run by German immigrants looking for a warmer lifestyle. The schnitzel, goulash, and German beer were as good as we remembered and also brought back good memories of time spent in Germany. The next night we dined at another good restaurant featuring curry. The nice thing about Mexico is whether it is Mexican food or otherwise, you seldom experience a bad meal in Mexico.

We left the marina after 2 nights and sailed 2 hours to Punta Mita, the northern entrance to Banderas Bay. Once again we anchored offshore to await our passage to Mazatlan. The Punta Mita shoreline is lined with resorts, condos and restaurants, but to the west, the surf comes in strong much to the delight of the surfers. From our boat, they are a treat to watch.

After two nights at Punta Mita, we receive another favorable weather report and early Monday morning we raise the anchor and headed north. It was smooth going all day and all night. About 10 pm we encountered 6-8 shrimp boats working dead ahead, but with the aid of radar after a couple hours we passed safely through the fishing fleet. There were no more challenges till we arrive in Mazatlan about 10 am only to find the surf was up making entrance into the marina hazardous. After a few hours of not so patiently waiting, the surf mellowed out some and we were able enter the marina without difficulty. Once past the breakwater, we motored to our Marina condo at Costa Bonita, and our slip was waiting. Someone took our lines and we were home after enjoyable 5 week cruise.

Paul is originally from New York, and Vanessa from Mazatlan. Paul has come to Mazatlan for over 20 years, but, living full time 3 years now. I asked Paul how is it been living in Mazatlan? He said “Wonderful, I’m living in Paradise with the Finest Flower “.
Now they are part of the community, and participate in activities in the city as any of the locals do, and taking the best of it every day, nice weather, incredible view and world wide best sunsets, excellent food, fine art work, history, great music, friendly people and good fishing.
They own an 18.5 Ft. Island Invader, with 2 out of board motor, 90 hp and 10 hp for back up, they keep it in Nautica Costa Bonita storage and take it out at least once a week to go out fishing, Paul says, Vanessa always gets bigger fish than he does. They have been at Nautica for a year as members of the yacht club, and love it!
